Corfu town’s Fortresses
A walk on the fortresses of Corfu town is not to be missed. It is a unique place where you can see in front of your eyes 2,500 years of history in its most dramatic moments!

The two fortresses are situated at the eastern and western parts of the old Town. In the past, fortifications led from one fortress to the other. Today, we only have few parts of the fortifications left, as well as two of the gates to the town: the Spilia gate and the gate of Saint Nicolas. Created by top architects and engineers, the fortresses of Corfu are two of the most important defensive complexes in the Mediterranean . 

The Old Fortress is a special walking place, unique in its kind, whereas the New Fortress, recently renovated, it hosts many art exhibitions and music concerts.Both fortresses offer a panoramic view over the countryside, the Town, the suburbs and the sea.Achilleion
This palace was built at the end of 19th century by Empress Elizabeth of Austria (Sissy) whose beloved son Rudolf and his lover died mysteriously (most likely a double suicide) at Mayerling in 1889. The empress identified him with Achilles, and so the palace is really a memorial to her son (and her grief)--thus the many statues and motifs associated with Achilles.Palaiokastritsa Monastery
This monastery, built in the 13th century, situated on top of a Cape, offers one of the most breath taking views of the area!  Do not miss the little rocky island in the shape of a ship, called ‘Ulysses ship’. After all, legend has it that it was here in Palaiokastritsa where Ulysses, after God Poseidon turned his ship into a rock, landed and met Nausica the daughter of the king of Pheaces.Mon Repos
Built in 1831 the Mon-Repos Palace is located atop a hill within a 250 acre park in the middle of Corfu´s archeological centre. According to historians, the ancient city of Corfu  had originally been there. Having been recently magnificently restored it is now  a superb museum housing many of the Islands treasures.
